A historic painting of the nation's first president that disappeared from an Englewood storage unit more than a year ago has been located thanks to a Crime Stoppers tip. On Jan. 22, 2024, Englewood Police received a report about a theft from a storage facility in the 3300 block of South Santa Fe Drive. An early 1800s painting of George Washington, the nation's first president, was among items taken. Police said the theft may have occurred nearly two weeks earlier on Jan. 10, 2024. It remained missing until this month despite a collaborative investigation between the Englewood Police Department and the FBI Denver Field Office. According to Englewood Police, a Crime Stoppers tip this month provided a crucial lead about who may have been involved with the theft. After looking into the tip, Englewood Police identified a person who was believed to be in possession of the painting. Police contacted the person who said he had "unknowingly acquired" the stolen painting. He said that he stayed at a Denver hotel last year, and the clerk there gave him the painting after finding it abandoned in a room. Due to the widespread publicity surrounding the theft, he said he was hesitant to come forward.
