Description
A new lawsuit filed by 11th judicial district counties, Chaffee, Custer and Fremont, alleges former District Attorney Linda Stanley used taxpayer money to pay for defense attorneys used in her misconduct trial.
In that trial, the state found Stanley guilty of unethical behavior while handling the Barry Morphew case. He was on trial for the murder of his wife Suzanne in 2020.
Court documents, published Thursday, state Stanley knew it was against the law to misuse taxpayer money but did it anyway.
9NEWS legal expert Scott Robinson said it's ironic Stanley used money unethically in a trial where her ethics were in question.
"It’s really adding insult on top of injury for the taxpayers of Custer, Chaffee and Fremont counties," Robinson said. "They should not have been funding Linda Stanley’s efforts to not be disbarred."
Stanley was disbarred, following the trial. She lost her license and credibility in the legal world.
"It’s hard to think the Supreme Court of Colorado would look at this as anything but an awful violation of ethics but you can’t disbar somebody twice," Robinson said.
The lawsuit claims Stanley stole more than $111,000 from taxpayers across the three counties.
