The City of Pueblo is calling the two large fires last week a wake-up call for residents.
An alarming wildfire story out of Pueblo. Last Friday crews battled the Vision Hills and the Evarz Fire.
There were huge plumes of black smoke in the air forcing evacuations and a shelter in place for the Evarz Fire.
KRDO13 learned only 2.5% of people there are signed up for emergency alerts.
The city said this and the Steel Mill Fire could have easily gotten out of control and led to even more evacuations.
Tonight leaders are urging people to sign up for alerts to make sure they're safe in the next emergency.
Emergency dispatchers like Caitlin Grist were sending out emergency notifications like this last Friday and Saturday as two fires were burning in both the city and county. The fires left plumes of smoke in the air.
The City of Pueblo-- sent out pre-evacuation orders for the Visions Hills Fire on Friday. As well as a shelter-in-place for the Evarz Fire using their emergency notification system.
The city realized only 2.5% of city residents are registered for these life-saving alerts.
Signing up for these emergency alerts takes fewer than five minutes.
