Description
A rabies alert has been issued for parts of Hillsborough County after a cat attacked four people and later tested positive for the virus. The alert will remain in effect for 60 days as health officials monitor the area for any further cases.
The attack took place in a subdivision near Twelve Oaks Boulevard and Waters Avenue. Local health officials are now concerned that more cats in the area may also be infected.
"There are hundreds of cats in this neighborhood. I could probably trap 100 cats in the next 60 days during the rabies alert and still not quite get all of them," Kristy Bush, a licensed cat trapper who regularly works in the area, said.
Many residents say the large stray cat population is nothing new. In addition to cats, neighbors have reported seeing a variety of wildlife in the area.
"A couple of weeks ago, I saw a peacock down the street, which was kind of awesome to see these animals in the neighborhood, cranes and peacocks and all kinds of different animals," Paul Jonathan of Town N' Country said.
However, some neighbors may unknowingly be making the problem worse.
"Greeting them, feeding them, and just trying to help out the animals that are stray," Jonathan added.
After the rabid cat incident, health officials are urging residents to avoid feeding or interacting with any wild or stray animals.
"Avoid all contact with any wild animals or animals in their area and never feed any wild animals in your area," Claire Maher with the Florida Department of Health in Hillsborough County warned.
The rabies alert zone is bordered by Linebaugh Avenue to the north, Waters Avenue to the south, Anderson Road to the east and Wilsky Boulevard to the west.
"Make sure that your pets are immunized with the rabies vaccine so we want you to call your veterinarian to make sure that they can stay up-to-date with that rabies vaccination," Maher added.
