Description
A St. Petersburg police officer is in jail Tuesday after investigators found he gave information from a restricted database at work to a man who later was arrested for planting explosives at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino in Tampa, according to a statement from the St. Petersburg Police Department (SPPD).
The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office took Ofc. Brandon Klaiber into custody on an arrest warrant issued by the St. Petersburg Police Department Tuesday.
Police said the Florida Department of Law Enforcement told them in late 2024 of potential criminal violations involving Klaiber for sharing protected information from law enforcement databases with Bryan Eckley, who FDLE charged with planting explosives at the Hard Rock Casino in September 2024.
Eckley is accused of placing two remote-controlled explosives inside the men's restrooms on Sept. 29 and Sept. 30, according to a news release from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE).
Officials said casino employees found the devices before they could cause any damage. The building had to be evacuated twice while bomb squads disabled the devices.
The 46-year-old was arrested on Oct. 30 and booked into the Hillsborough County Jail.
Investigators discovered text messages between Eckley and Klaiber where Klaiber shared information obtained from restricted databases to Eckley when requested, police said.
SPPD said it launched an investigation and placed Klaiber on leave on Dec. 2, 2024, suspending all his credentials and computer access for the duration of the investigation. SPPD worked with the state attorney's office and obtained a warrant for Klaiber's arrest.
He is currently charged with two counts of offenses against intellectual property.
Klaiber was sworn in as a St. Petersburg police officer in November 2008, SPPD said.
Klaiber has been placed on administrative leave without pay as the investigation continues.
