Description
It started with a supersonic jet and a bold idea — that Tampa Bay could become an international gateway. Forty years later, the impact of that first nonstop flight to London is still paying off in a big way.
In 1985, British Airways launched its inaugural service from Tampa International Airport (TPA) to London, flying the legendary Concorde jet. Thousands gathered at the airport to witness history as Tampa Bay joined the ranks of cities offering direct European travel. At the time the jet was so iconic, it symbolized speed, innovation, and luxury. That first transatlantic flight wasn't just a novelty — it was the start of a long-standing partnership that continues to boost the region’s economy.
“That first flight to London really helped pave the way,” said Beau Zimmer with TPA. “It proved that Tampa Bay could support international service on a big widebody jet.”
