Description
Hillsborough County is the latest and largest county to sign on board with a state-level DOGE effort to audit spending, spearheaded by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
On Wednesday, the Hillsborough Board of County Commissioners voted 6-1 to sign and send a letter to the governor’s office committing to participating with the executive office’s new DOGE team while also creating a committee to collaborate with them on the effort.
“I think everyone should welcome audits. If you don’t welcome an audit, it really raises questions about what you are hiding,” said Commissioner Josh Wostal, who put forth the resolution.
The Hillsborough DOGE Liaison committee will be made up of five local registered voters, selected through a vote by the board. Each will have to have at least one of the following educational credentials, accountant, economist, financial professional, auditor, IT or HR professional.
The committee will meet monthly for up to a year, providing written updates and a final report.
"We're going to make the appropriate adjustments to the budget based on anything that is found," Commissioner Christine Miller said. "I think that that's what we should be doing. It's taxpayer dollars, and we should be making sure that those monies are being spent appropriately at all levels of government."
Hillsborough’s approval comes two weeks after DeSantis posted on X, calling on more counties to hop on board with the effort.
