Description
The Tampa Bay Rays announced Thursday they will not be getting a new stadium under the current deal.
The Rays announced on social media that they could not move forward with the project. The team was facing a deadline of March 31 to decide on if they wanted to proceed with the redevelopment deal.
"After careful deliberation, we have concluded we cannot move forward with the new ballpark and development project at this moment. A series of events beginning in October that no one could have anticipated led this difficult decision," the statement read.
Officials also said St. Petersburg is moving forward with plans to restore Tropicana Field by 2026 after it was severely damaged with the roof being torn off during Hurricane Milton.
The Rays will play their upcoming season at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa.
Just a few days ago, reports were swirling that MLB commissioner Rob Manfred and other owners were pressuring Stu Sternberg to sell the Rays.
