Description
A man accused of shooting and killing another man in a gay hate crime at a Tampa dog park has been found not guilty on all counts.
Gerald Declan Radford was on trial for the death of John 'Walter' Lay. Jury selection in the case wrapped up Monday, with jurors hearing testimony from state prosecutors and defense attorneys Tuesday and Wednesday. The jury delivered the verdict on Thursday afternoon.
Radford was charged with second-degree murder. If he had been convicted, the state planned to seek a hate crime enhancement. However, throughout the trial, defense attorneys argued that Radford acted in self-defense.
“There are two sides to every story,” Shanna Bailey, one of Radford’s attorneys, said.
Radford called 911 during the morning of Feb. 2, 2024, telling dispatchers he shot a man at West Dog Park on North Occident Street. Radford said he and Lay were in a "scuffle" when he pulled out his gun and shot him.
