Description
Transitional Sheltering Assistance through FEMA will come to a close for some residents displaced by hurricanes Helene or Milton next week.
Impacted people have lived in various hotels that accepted the agency's program for months now.
But residents who are unable to return to their hurricane-damaged homes after TSA ends pending permit approvals or repairs are now left seeking semi-permanent housing through rental assistance.
FEMA may offer money to use toward rental housing if you are displaced from your home due to a disaster.
Jennifer Gans of St. Petersburg is in the process of applying.
Gans said she's lived in a hotel since mid-November after her Shore Acres home took on 42 inches of water from Hurricane Helene.
But she's expected to check out of the hotel next Saturday.
"I sat on hold yesterday for two hours and 19 minutes," Gans said. "All of them are around for just a studio around $2,200. But that would be a year lease. So, if you move into a 7-month lease, which is really what I need because my house will be done sometime in August, hopefully, then you almost double."
On the heels of mass hotel checkouts, the city of St. Petersburg and the Bay Area Apartment Association will hold a hurricane recovery rental housing fair.
Eric Garduno with the not-for-profit said the goal is to connect Tampa Bay residents with rental providers who may offer concessions and flexible lease agreements.
"I expect that they'll have a number of vacancies ready to go," Garduno said. "So, for folks who are ready to move in soon, this is really the time if you've been displaced."
The housing fair is set for Wednesday, Jan. 22 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Coliseum in St. Petersburg.
