Description
Pinellas Suncoast Fire & Rescue Chief Jeffrey Davidson submitted his resignation letter on Monday following an investigation into allegations of discrimination and creating a toxic workplace.
"While I have valued my time at PSFRD and the opportunities provided, this decision comes after much reflection and is made under significant duress," the fire chief's letter read, in part.
Davidson said despite his numerous accomplishments and commitment to the role, the backlash of the investigation has left him with "no other option."
Complaints filed back in September accused Davidson of abusing power, denying medical privacy policies, undermining the union and creating a toxic work environment — including during one incident where he allegedly held a gun and made concerning comments to a firefighter struggling with mental health.
An investigation completed earlier this month found that Davidson violated the district's mission and values policy, but did not recommend any disciplinary action.
Still, a "loss of trust and confidence" in Davidson left many calling for his resignation.
In the resignation letter, Davidson said he and his family have been subject to harassment and slander designed to damage his reputation.
He also claims Union President Greg Hott and Assistant Fire Chief David Karpinecz fabricated complaints against him — going so far as to say Karpinecz collaborated with Hott and the union to have him fired in order to cover up their own wrongdoing.
