Description
The National Hurricane Center is keeping a close watch on a tropical disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico that could become the Atlantic hurricane season's first named storm.
However, it's not the only area worth watching: Tropical development is low but remains possible later this week off the coast of the southeastern U.S. and Florida.
Forecasters described heavy thunderstorm activity over Central America, the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico, and the adjacent waters of the northwestern Caribbean Sea and the southern Gulf of Mexico.
A tropical depression or storm is likely to form by midweek and move slowly westward or west-northwestward toward the western Gulf coast. In anticipation of the possible development, the system is designated as Potential Tropical Cyclone One.
