Description
A major facelift is in the works for Lakeland's downtown Munn Park.
City leaders just voted to move forward with a conceptual design that would bring all sorts of family-friendly features to the downtown space, which was last redesigned nearly 35 years ago.
Munn Park has been around since the late 1800s. It was last redesigned in 1989 and is in need of a facelift, according to visitors.
“If it is at the center of the city, you want it to be the centerpiece. You want it to be fantastic,” Lakeland visitor Simon Courtney said. “It should be a jewel.”
Tara Griner, a mom who works in downtown Lakeland agrees.
“I would like to see a little bit more of a family environment,” she said.
“Garden spaces,” Lakeland resident Chantelle Thomas said. “Using the space around them in nature to make it more of scenic space to sit down in and enjoy.”
The city surveyed more than 1,700 people with similar opinions of what they’d like to see Munn Park become, and what they see as a priority for its future.
A design form came up with renderings showing Munn Park being transformed into a more active space with a shaded area on the north end, adorned with modern sculptures, a dog park, a splash pad, and a large open green at the center.
