Hallways and classrooms at the Pace Center for Girls in Bradenton look pretty much like any other school; except for it’s just girls here, and the positive messaging that adorns almost every wall. “We say here at Pace that every day we are changing girls' lives, and we believe when we are changing a girl’s life, we are changing the fabric of the community,” explains Amy Wick Mavis, the executive director of Pace Manatee. Sixty-four middle and high schoolers attend Pace for a variety of reasons. Most have suffered some kind of trauma; maybe their home life isn’t the best, or maybe they’ve been bullied. And because of that, they’ve fallen behind in school.
