Description
Florida lawmakers are looking to honor the legacy of Gabby Petito with legislation aimed at helping others avoid the same "tragic and preventable" fate that she met.
On Wednesday, Senate Democratic Leader Lauren Book filed the "Gabby Petito Act" (SB 610) focused on strengthening domestic violence prevention efforts in Florida. The bill was influenced by Gabby’s father, Joe Petito, who lives in Vero Beach.
“United as a family, we stand together in support of this legislative bill against domestic violence, advocating for justice, protection, and a brighter future for all,” Joe Petito said.
Under the legislation, law enforcement officers would be required to complete something called a lethality assessment during domestic violence investigations. This assessment, which is approved by the U.S. Department of Justice's Office on Violence Against Women, is designed to evaluate the potential for serious injury or death.
The bill would require the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to collaborate with other state agencies and domestic violence prevention organizations to develop policies and training programs to effectively implement the lethality assessments.
