Description
Two women in an SUV were stuck in traffic when a train crashed into them Friday afternoon, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.
First responders arrived at East Broadway Avenue and East Tampa Boulevard in Tampa shortly after 1 p.m., authorities said. The women, who were said to be in their 40s, "remarkably" only sustained minor injuries after their SUV was hit by the train traveling nearly 70 miles per hour, the sheriff's office reported.
The two women were also wearing seatbelts at the time, the agency noted.
"This reinforces the importance of wearing a seatbelt at all times to stay safe behind the wheel," Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement.
According to Amtrak, the train was traveling from New York to Miami before the crash occurred.
