Description
An eyewitness captured the moment passengers escaped from smoke-filled carriages at Clapham Common station in London on Friday.
In the video, you can see tube workers smashing windows with hammers to help stressed passengers out of the carriages, which stayed closed despite the heavy smoke inside them.
The fire alert at the station was prompted by a technical issue involving a ventilation fan failure, the BBC has said.
According to British Transport Police in London, the issue is believed to have been caused by brake dust which can often be confused with burning. There were no reports of any injuries.
