Description
Relocated elephants in Malawi have become a cause of serious contention between conservationists and villagers who say lack of adequate fencing around Kasungu National Park allows the animals to enter human settlements, destroy crops, damage buildings and even cause deaths. Allegations the government denies. “Some of the issues that are being claimed out there they are not true,” says Joseph Nkosi, spokesperson for the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Culture. The mammals at the centre of this conflict include those moved to the area in 2022 from another national park, to tackle overpopulation issues which led to an increase in cases of elephants straying into villages there.
