Germany's new Chancellor Friedrich Merz says Berlin is open to relaxing strict EU fiscal rules to allow member states to ramp up defence spending. Speaking at a press conference alongside Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Merz points to a recent change to Germany's constitutional debt rules to largely exempt defence spending, saying "we can imagine something similar for the European fiscal pact or fiscal rules."
