Description
US cardinals hold a press conference in the Vatican the day after compatriot Robert Francis Prevost was elected as the Catholic Church's new pope, the first American to hold the position in its history. "He's a bridge builder," says Cardinal Timothy Michael Dolan, who stresses that his fellow conclave electors would not have thought of Pope Leo XIV as "a counterweight to any one person," addressing the new pontiff's possible relationship with US President Donald Trump. "Obviously, the cardinals were quite aware of things that have occurred in the United States," says Cardinal Wilton Daniel Gregory, "statements that have been made, political actions that have been taken."
