Description
When the sun rises over the tropical jungle of Panama's Coiba Island, it awakens a loud chorus of wildlife and a group of rangers committed to protecting this shared home.
The island, located off the Pacific coast, is the largest of 38 in the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Coiba National Park, a 2,700-square-kilometer zone mostly dedicated to marine reserves.
It is home to hundreds of species, including some threatened or endangered animals such as the scarlet macaw and the hawksbill turtle.
The ranger community in Coiba has recently expanded to 42 members, in an effort to strengthen its defense against threats such as illegal fishing, wildlife poaching, and even drug trafficking. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES ARRANGED IN SEQUENCES
