"May God give Putin some sense," says Luidmyla Sorokina, resident of the eastern Ukrainian village of Bilystke, after the Russian leader rejected calls for a full and unconditional 30-day truce starting on Monday and instead proposed direct talks in Istanbul on Thursday. Despite the continued rumble of fighting in the distance, Sorokina adds "I believe there will be truce". Kyiv's European allies have warned that a truce must be in place for talks to begin, but Moscow has effectively ignored this, with Ukraine reporting attacks across the front line.
