Description
A Coast Guard crew in St. Petersburg rescued a man after his 15-foot vessel capsized near the Sunshine Skyway Bridge early Saturday morning.
Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg watchstanders received a 911 transfer of the man's situation around 7:34 a.m., the agency said in a news release. St. Petersburg Fire Rescue and the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office were also responding.
The crew was able to save the man from the water around 7:56 a.m. before handing him over to a St. Petersburg Fire Rescue boat crew. He was then taken to Maximo Boat Ramp and suffered no injuries, officials said.
"Sharing his float plan with his wife and coordination between partner agencies helped save this man's life,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Joseph Catell, an operations unit controller at Sector St. Petersburg. “With National Safe Boating Week fast approaching, May 17-23, all boaters are reminded to brush up on boating safety skills and prepare for the boating season.”
