Description
The debate over short-term rentals in one Pinellas County beach community persists.
A number of longtime Indian Rocks Beach are calling on city commissioners to further enforce its 2023 rules on short-term rentals like Airbnbs and VRBOs.
10 Tampa Bay has been following the issue for years. Within the last year, city commissioners held back-and-forth discussions over whether to scale back regulations in large part due to the risk of litigation and costs associated with it.
Most recently, city commissioners voted to scale back the rules in January but delayed adopting the changes during its second reading in February.
A code compliance and special magistrate hearing was held Wednesday where fines were imposed over reported registration violations among short-term rental owners. The city announced in March it would begin notification process of scheduled magistrate hearings and notices to comply after delays from the impact of back-to-back hurricanes last fall.
"There's properties that have had literally half a dozen police responses, but they've never brought them to magistrate court," resident Bob Coplen said.
Coplen, a resident of nearly 40 years in Indian Rocks Beach, said it's a necessary move but wishes more can be done for other concerns including noise, parking and other reported disruptions.
