Description
Tallahassee police revealed new details Wednesday about Phoenix Ikner, the suspected gunman in the deadly shooting at Florida State University.
Ikner, 20, was shot once in the jaw by responding law enforcement after he opened fire on the FSU campus just before lunchtime on April 17, according to a spokesperson for the Tallahassee Police Department.
"The suspect remains hospitalized with significant injuries but is expected to survive," the spokesperson said.
Officials previously said it could be "several weeks" before Ikner is discharged from Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare.
Meanwhile, five surviving victims of the shooting at FSU have been discharged from the same hospital after being treated.
Two other victims in the shooting, 45-year-old Tiru Chabba and 57-year-old Ricardo Morales, were killed.
While Ikner will not be formally charged until he is released from the hospital, police said his charges "will be up to and including first-degree murder."
Ikner is the stepson of Leon County Deputy Jessica Ikner. Authorities said he used his stepmother’s former service weapon in the shooting.
Ikner's motive remains unknown.
