Description
One of Colorado's most popular scenic roads will not be opening in time for the holiday weekend.
Rocky Mountain National Park said Thursday that Trail Ridge Road is not anticipated to open over Memorial Day weekend this year.
Over the past week, snowplow operators have faced setbacks from previous progress, the release said. Wind has been the main challenge, the release said, causing low visibility and snow drifting back over cleared areas. There is a thick ice layer beneath the drifted snow.
Snow and overnight freezing temperatures are forecast above 10,000 feet in the park over the weekend, according to the release.
No estimate has been given for when the road will reopen.
Trail Ridge Road is the highest continuous paved road in the United States. It climbs to 12,183 feet and connects the towns of Estes Park and Grand Lake. It typically opens each year during the last week in May and stays open as long as the weather permits.
