Meteorologist Alexandra Cranford has an update on Fiona on Sunday evening, September 18, 2022. Fiona is a Category 1 hurricane near western Puerto Rico as of late Sunday. It is heading northwest and will move over extreme eastern Dominican Republic on Sunday night as a hurricane with heavy rain, high winds and dangerous seas. Fiona will curve north away from Dominican Republic on Monday and Tuesday likely as a strengthening hurricane. It could even achieve Category 3 status by Tuesday as it heads north over the western Atlantic around a ridge of high pressure. If it reaches Category 3 with winds of 111-129 mph, it would be the first major hurricane of the Atlantic season.
