Description
Paul and Elizabeth Welch were considering moving after their cabin in Comfort, Texas, was destroyed in the July 4th floods. Then, a man showed up and asked if he needed any help.
"And I said, `I desperately need some help,'" Paul Welch said as the sounds of work echoed across his property. "And he said, `I’ll have equipment. I’ll have an army here tomorrow.’ And I thought, that is just too good to be true."
But it was true.
In the week since raging rivers claimed around 130 lives and left perhaps another 160 missing, a flood of volunteers has descended upon the Texas Hill Country.
A crew from several Latin American countries showed up at Colleen Lucas' home in Ingram, Texas. She didn't have insurance.
"It's really emotional," she said as workers tried to repair one of her husband's vehicles. "It's been a blessing. God has watched over us through this whole ordeal. And I cannot express how much I appreciate everything that they have done for us."
Over in Kerrville, Daniel Olivas returned home to find crayfish floating in his house. Two men showed up at his door. They were from a church more than 200 miles away.
They knew his name and told him they would be back with reinforcements.
"I call them our 33 angels that ascended upon us," Olivas said.
Elizabeth Welch said a company donated a camper and said they could keep it until they figured out what they would do next.
“We are beyond grateful for these people and this equipment and this manpower," she said, her voice choked with emotion. "The giving and the love. It’s just filled our hearts.”
Added her husband: "We have hope now.”
