Frustration is growing in Grove City as residents believe a group of teens is behind a string of car break-ins and now, a stolen vehicle.
One homeowner said his SUV was taken right from his driveway over the Fourth of July weekend, and the suspects didn’t stop there. They posted videos of their joyride online.
Alan Dodson said he never thought he’d become a victim after seeing 10TV’s report last week on car break-ins in neighborhoods like Meadow Grove. But that changed Saturday morning.
“I got home, thought the wife was at cheer practice, walked in the house, all the kids are in the living room,” Dodson said. “I walk upstairs and I’m like, ‘Hey, where is your car?’”
The couple’s GMC Denali had been stolen. Dodson said the suspects took the car keys, a stick of deodorant and left his wife’s purse on the porch.
Though Dodson lives in Grove City, his home falls within Columbus police's jurisdiction.
Just 24 hours before his car was stolen, Grove City police released surveillance video of individuals with guns breaking into cars in the area. It’s unclear if the same suspects are responsible, but investigators believe the crimes may be connected.
Dodson reported the theft to Columbus police, but also began his own search using neighborhood doorbell cameras and social media.
“They got caught on the doorbell camera, that’s the wife’s car there,” he said, pointing to a video clip. “This is them going through these two people’s cars at 5:40 in the morning.”
Another video, shared by the suspects themselves, appears to show them driving Dodson’s car and even ordering food at a Wendy’s drive-thru.
“How can you tell that’s your wife’s car?” Bryn Caswell asked.
“The steering wheel cover,” Dodson replied. “It’s black and holographic rainbow.”
On Sunday, Dodson found the SUV abandoned on Saffron Road. Inside were other stolen items: handbags, a wallet, Amazon packages, even a firearm magazine and drug paraphernalia. He turned everything over to the police.
Dodson felt the entire situation could be avoided if parents started parenting.
“For 15 to 16-year-old kids to be running around with pistols and robbing people—it’s not the way to go about it,” he said. “It’s the lack of parenting. The lack of forcing and being responsible to show your kids the right path.”
Investigators are now working to determine whether the recent car break-ins and the stolen SUV are connected. So far, no arrests have been made.
Authorities urge anyone who believes their vehicle has been tampered with, even if nothing is taken, to file a police report. Investigators say the more information they receive, the better chance they have at identifying suspects and making arrests.
