June 25 on The Story: Within a few weeks, officials at Multnomah County intend to open a drop-in day center for homeless people in the heart of St. Johns, providing people with a place to get food, shower, receive mail and connect with case management services during weekdays. While it's the kind of thing we often find provoking resistance in Portland-area neighborhoods, nearby business owners were cautiously optimistic — and the outreach they received from the county is one reason why. The other reason, simply put, is that this is already an area impacted by unsheltered homelessness, and neighbors are willing to see if a place to get help will make positive change.
