Description
The Indiana Department of Correction is piling up IOUs after running out of money to reimburse county jails for housing inmates.
The local jails are owed hundreds of thousands of dollars from the state for housing prisoners. The payments haven't been made for months.
"It's been a few months since we've had any reimbursed," said Bartholomew County Sheriff Chris Lane. "I know it's up over $100,000 just for Bartholomew County."
"It's several hundred thousand dollars. It's quite a bit of money," said Tippecanoe County Sheriff Bob Goldsmith.
Tippecanoe County hasn't been paid since last April — nearly a year.
The Indiana Department of Correction confirmed to 13News it ran out of money for reimbursements, saying, "funding for this expense has been exhausted for state Fiscal Year 2025."
When asked why, we received no response. Sheriffs also don't know when the money will show up.
