Description
An Indianapolis man is taking a plea deal for shooting and killing his Lyft driver before stealing his car. Devin Powell pleaded guilty in court Monday afternoon to the murder of 34-year-old Tony Garland more than two years ago on the far west side of Indianapolis.
Garland was working as a Lyft rideshare driver on June 30, 2022, when he picked up Powell sometime after midnight. Garland's body was found around 6 a.m. that morning along Waterfront Parkway West Drive, just a few hundred yards from Powell’s apartment.
"Detectives submitted a warrant for records from Lyft and learned that the last account that called for a ride from Mr. Garland belonged to one Devin Powell,” said Marion County deputy prosecutor John Molloy, reading a summary in court of the case the state intended to prove.
GPS tracking showed Garland's white GMC Acadia in Merrillville, Indiana. Police there pulled over the car and found Powell behind the wheel and blood on the center console. He told police he was in Merrillville attending a family function.
