Description
A man is in police custody after Clearwater Police Chief Eric Gandy said he opened fire on a police substation early Monday morning, prompting a massive response that included the Tampa Police Department bomb squad.
Gandy said around 4 a.m., 25-year-old Gamaliel Reyes went to the Clearwater Police Department substation at 700 Bay Way and shot at the building and an unoccupied police car with a handgun.
Officers inside the station at the time heard the gunfire and went outside to investigate, finding the man speeding away in a car.
Shortly after the shooting, Gandy said Reyes called 911, admitting to the shooting and offering to turn himself in. He was arrested Monday morning without incident.
Gandy said due to suspicious evidence found at the scene, the Tampa Police Department bomb squad was called to respond but later cleared the scene.
No one was injured in the shooting, which Gandy said was "purposeful and accurate," referencing gunshots to the driver's side of a police car that had recently been parked.
“If that officer had been sitting in that car, we’d be having a different conversation today,” Gandy said.
Gandy said despite Reyes turning himself in to police, he's no longer talking to investigators. The department is still working to find out why Reyes shot the police station and if he worked alone.
Reyes has been charged with shooting into a building and shooting into an unoccupied vehicle, among other felony charges.
