Description
More than 200 cats were rescued from a home in Manatee County after a resident, who had been feeding a growing number of stray cats, reached out to authorities for help.
It happened earlier this week in an unincorporated area off U.S. 41 near Palmetto. County officials say while the initial effort was an act of compassion, the population of cats — both Siamese and Siamese-mixed — quickly increased due to the lack of spay and neuter interventions. So, the resident wanted to do what was best for the animals.
“This was not about cruelty or neglect—it was about someone trying to do good who became overwhelmed,” Sarah Brown, director of Community & Veterans Services, said in a statement. “We’re proud of the quick and humane response from our team and partners, and we’re especially thankful to the resident for seeking help.”
Crews from Manatee County Animal Welfare (MCAW), Manatee County Public Safety and multiple animal rescue organizations answered for help. Despite the large number of cats, officials say they were in good health and good spirits. Plus, they were able to move freely between the home and outdoors, contributing to their overall well-being.
Only one cat required more intensive medical care due to an eye issue, according to officials. The vast majority were assessed, treated and safely taken to shelters and rescues across Florida. Now, they're ready to find a new home.
