Description
Marion County Sheriff Kerry Forestal says Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has not housed many detainees in the jail, but the state is keeping hundreds of prisoners there and isn't paying for them.
Forestal posted the statement on Facebook in response to inquiries from the media and citizens.
On ICE, Forestal says the jail has never housed more than 128 detainees at a time. He said larger numbers cited represent how many detainees are processed in a year, not at a single time. He also said the federal government pays $75 a day for every detainee and prisoner held in the jail.
