Description
Bears across Colorado are getting bold, breaking into cars, creeping into cities, and making off with anything that smells remotely edible — even vanilla-scented hand lotion.
The problem: Most bear calls involved an unlocked car.
In Boulder County, sheriff’s deputies have responded to a flurry of bear calls this summer in and around Allenspark, Winiger Ridge, Lee Hill Drive, Sugarloaf Road and Ferncliff.
Deputy Eric Blandford responded to the calls for help. A light-hearted video posted by the sheriff’s office shows one such encounter. Officials said the “here, bear, bear, bear…” audio was edited into the video later.
Wildlife experts said bears can sniff out everything from granola bars to hand sanitizer. Once inside a car, they often can’t get out, leading to shredded seats, broken windows and serious interior damage.
Deputies urged people to lock their cars, no matter how short the stop or remote the trailhead.
