Description
One of Denver's most popular annual festivals could be forced to find a new venue after this year due to environmental concerns.
A spokesperson for the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival said that if conditions continue to deteriorate at Sloan's Lake, alternate venues might have to be considered.
In 2020, Denver Parks and Recreation partnered with the Denver Department of Public Health and Environment, Denver Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Wastewater Management and Mile High Flood District to evaluate existing conditions that may be contributing to aquatic habitat health issues impacting the lake, including increased blue-green algae blooms and fish kills.
Denver Parks and Recreation said the lake has accumulated a significant amount of sediment over the past several decades, leading to an average water depth of 3.5 feet, which may be contributing to the increased environmental concerns.
This year's Dragon Boat Festival, which is its 25th anniversary, was moved from its usual July dates to Sept. 6 and 7 due in part to the concerns, including algae blooms.
The festival's spokesperson said they remain committed to Sloan's Lake as the home of the festival and are working with the Sloan’s Lake Foundation and Denver Parks and Recreation to support the health and sustainability of the lake.
The festival says it is the largest Dragon Boat festival in the United States, with more than 200,000 attendees expected this year, and that it is the premier Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander cultural celebration in the Rocky Mountain region.
