Description
Kilmar Abrego Garcia reunited with his family on Friday after 160 days apart. However, his fight is far from over. He surrendered to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody Monday morning less than 72 hours after being released from jail in Tennessee. The Justice Department has charged him with human smuggling in connection with a 2022 traffic stop in the state. On Saturday, Trump administration officials said the government would seek to remove Abrego Garcia to Uganda after he rejected an offer to plead guilty and remain in jail in exchange for deportation to Costa Rica. Abrego Garcia’s attorneys have argued he is being targeted by the administration for having the “audacity to fight back” following his unlawful deportation. A federal judge barred the Trump administration temporarily from removing Abrego Garcia from a Virginia detention facility while he fights efforts to deport him to Uganda.
