Description
At least 8 prisoners behind a locked door. One armed guard across the room. Watch the lower part of the screen as he suddenly slumps unconscious.
(Nick Kelton/inmate 12:56:00)
"He just fell over. Looked like an act. Could have died right there."
Nick Kelton and other inmates shouted for help. Then managed to bust out of their holding room, even though they knew it was dangerous.
(12:57:20)
"We were worried. They're going to come with guns drawn on us."
The guard had no pulse. Inmates screamed and banged on doors. So loud that deputies upstairs in court came running.
(Floyd Smith 13:01:15))
"They thought it was a fight. They thought we were taking over."
(sgt Ryan Speegle)
"He had keys. Had a gun. It could have been an extremely bad situation."
Sergeant Ryan Speegle rushed in first. Corralled the inmates, still not completely understanding what was happening. Deputies started CPR. Paramedics arrived. Shocked the guard. Regained a pulse. Inmates watched life returning.
(12:58:08)
"Why did you do that? He's a good man. Save his life."
Nick Kelton says he's a meth addict facing his fourth trip to prison. Captain Mark Arnett believes prisoners certainly helped the guard, and likely saved him.
(12:00:17)
"He could have been there 15 minutes before any other staff walked in and found him."
To show one's true stripes is to reveal character. Nick Kelton and the others went to court expecting to do time…not give it.
(13:06:37 both inmates)
"It never cross my mind not to help. Whether he's got a gun or a badge. If he falls down, I'm gonna help him. Seems natural to me. Yep
