Description
1961: CONGO CRISIS AT NEW PEAK: The Soviet seizes upon the slaying of deposed Congolese Premier Patrice Lumumba as pretext for its most massive attack on the United Nations. Scenes trace the stormy career of Lumumba from his coming to power to his capture by strong-man Mobutu. Following his death, well-organized demonstrations in Moscow, New York, and most of the world's major cities are accompanied by demands that U.N. Secretary General Hammarskjold resign, and that all U.N. troops be pulled out of the Congo. Debate in the Security Council is interrupted by a violent demonstration in the galleries, during U.S. Ambassador Adlai Stevenson's defense against what he calls a Soviet "Declaration of War" against the world organization.
