French Nobel winner reflects on 30-year-old HIV breakthrough May 20th marks 30 years since the the virus now known as HIV was first isolated in the lab. Responsible for the breakthrough was a team of French scientists working at the Pasteur Institute in Paris under Luc Montagnier, who was later jointly awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine for his work.
