Gabon celebrates 100-year legacy of pioneering doctor Gabon has officially marked the centenary of the arrival of the doctor, theologian and Nobel Peace Prize winner Albert Schweitzer to the country. A pioneer of humanitarian medicine, Schweitzer founded a hospital in the small town of Lambarene, where researchers today are working to develop a vaccine against malaria.
