Lemkos: abandoned minority of shattered Ukraine war zone The Lemkos are a tiny and largely forgotten minority whose tragic history has seen them tossed across eastern Europe for generations. Following a deal between the Soviet Union and Poland's then government in 1944, the Lemkos were shipped to eastern Ukraine -- the current scene of fighting that has claimed more than 8,000 lives, where they find their existence threatened once more.
