Holy men flock to Nepal temple for Shivaratri festival Thousands of pilgrims travel to Kathmandu’s sprawling Pashupatinath temple complex every year from all over Nepal and India to celebrate the Shivaratri festival, held in honour of the Hindu god Shiva. Holy men – known as sadhus – mark the festival by praying, smearing their bodies with ashes and smoking cannabis, thanks to an ancient legal loophole that allows them to consume the otherwise illegal drug during celebrations.
