Turkey: Police block Kurdish protest over statue removal Police block protesters from gathering at the site where a statue commemorating the death of 34 Kurdish civilians in the village of Roboski in 2011 was removed on Sunday. The Kurds, 19 of them minors, were hit as Turkish authorities targeted rebels from the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK). The civilans, all male, had been smuggling goods from Iraq when they were mistaken for PKK members. The Turkish military cleared five army officers of any responsibility in a ruling in 2014.
