Description
Czech 'rattlers' replace bells flown to Rome for Easter Processions of people with wooden rattles walk through Czech villages and cities from Maundy Thursday until Holy Saturday, commemorating Jesus Christ's last supper. Services are held on this day, but at supper time, the church bells fall silent until the Easter Vigil. According to a Czech tradition, the bells have flown to Rome and so they are replaced by wooden rattles, mostly used by young boys who march around villages rattling three times a day. In Ceske Budejovice, a large procession of people wearing white masks marches through the city on those three days. IMAGES of the procession and SOUNDBITES from participants
