Description
Made in Albania: Carnival masks that travel the world In a small factory in northern Albania, artists delicately paint, gild and glue tens of thousands of one-of-a-kind Venetian masks that revellers around the world have been donning for carnival season. The 'Venice Art Mask Factory' and its staff of 50 export up to 30,000 masks annually to some 40 countries around the globe, including Italy, France, the US, UK and Australia. The owner Edmond Angoni, 64, opened the factory in northern Shkoder in 1997 after working abroad in Italy. He has also opened up seven shops in Venice that serve as a showroom for film and theatre professionals who also buy the masks for their productions. The costs of the masks, all handmade, range from around 20 euros to 1,500 euros for the most elaborate. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
