Description
Holy war: a battle over Montenegro's Orthodox faith Pressed into a rocky cliff-face in the heart of Montenegro, the Ostrog Monastery welcomes Orthodox pilgrims to its tranquil setting above a vista of rolling hills and tiny villages. \\nBut the peaceful exterior belies the religious turmoil that has divided the small Balkan state. Priests and their followers have taken to the streets, accusing the government of trying to steal their holy relics through a new law that could turn hundreds of churches, including Ostrog, into state property. The government, however, insists it is only claiming what is rightfully Montenegrin: the scores of old churches that are currently still run by the Serbian Orthodox Church, even though Montenegro declared its independence from Belgrade in 2006.
