Description
Snow tango keeps passions burning through harsh Finnish winter Twenty couples take to a snow-covered dancefloor to battle it out for the title of snow tango king and queen in the Finnish town of Tampere. The Argentinian dance is normally associated with fiery passion, but in Finland tango has been one of the most popular forms of music and dance since the 1930s. In a nod to the Finns' melancholy, reserved spirit, their adopted version of the discipline is played almost entirely in the minor key, while the costumes also have to serve to keep the dancers warm as they perform outside in sub-zero temperatures. The "Snow Tango Championships" have been held in Tampere every winter for 15 years and although the dance form has often been associated with older enthusiasts, tango lovers say nowadays more young Finns are also taking to the dancefloors.
