1961; 500-MILE RACE WON BY FOYT IN RECORD TIME: A crowd of 200;000 sees 33 starters get away in the Golden Anniversary running of the Indianapolis Speedway classic. A five-car pile-up slows the race after the first hour; but no one is injured. A.J. Foyt of Houston; Texas; wins the riches race ever run on the brick and asphalt track.
